The collaboration aims to address Africa’s growing healthcare challenges by focusing on the local production of affordable and high-quality monoclonal antibodies.
The initiative targets key disease areas, including cancer, diabetes-related eye conditions, infectious diseases, and autoimmune disorders. In addition to product development, the partnership will support skills training, technology transfer, and innovation in bioprocessing.
As part of the agreement, Sartorius Stedim Biotech will contribute to the research and development of biosimilar cell lines suited to regional health needs. It will also provide bioprocessing equipment and consumables, and assist in both upstream and downstream manufacturing activities.
Another key focus of the collaboration is workforce development. Specialised training programmes will be created to strengthen the skills of Africa’s biopharmaceutical workforce, helping to build long-term local expertise. Sartorius Stedim Biotech will also support process optimisation and offer services in analytical testing and quality control.
Through this partnership, Bio Usawa aims to combine advanced biomanufacturing technologies with regional knowledge and experience. The initiative is positioned to support the continent’s efforts in improving access to essential medicines, while building infrastructure and scientific capacity from within.
